  2. South West Sound at South By South West 08

    Fri 14 Dec '07

In 2008, 15 organisations from across the South West will descend upon Austin, Texas for the world’s most influential music business conference and all under the banner of South West Sound.

This is the first time that a delegation from the region will be travelling together to South By South West. And it’s not just an opportunity for the suits; six bands from the region will be heading to Texas and performing in front of the world’s music business.

South West Sound is fast developing as the banner to support music industry activity in the South West across the year. This year’s trip to South By South West is just the first step. South West Sound will be building on its presence at South By South West by travelling as a group to other overseas conventions and trade missions in a partnership with the UKTI, AIM and others.

South West Sound Project Manager Matt Booth said:

“Una from South By South West came to South West Sound in April 07 and she had a great time. We talked about the idea of getting a group of businesses from the South West to head out to Texas in March 08. I am really pleased that we’ve managed to pull this together and that South West Sound will have a delegation in Austin for the first time. It is a great chance for our region to put itself on the global map”

The Bristol leg of South West Sound, the annual music business convention for the region, will be hosted by the Watershed Media Centre in 2008.

The Watershed is at the heart of Bristol’s cultural sector, promoting creativity, innovation and talent. Not just a modern conference and performance venue, the Watershed is the hub for culture and media in Bristol. Mark Cosgrove, Head of Programme at the Watershed, is enthusiastic about this new partnership:

“Watershed is delighted to be supporting and collaborating on South West Sound 08 to grow and develop the music infrastructure, talent and skills in Bristol and the South West at what is an exciting time for the combined creative output of film, media and music”.

South West Sound enjoyed two great years with the Colston Hall in 2006 and 2007, and the Colston Hall remains a key partner in the event. Colston Hall Director Graeme Howell said,

“Bristol’s cultural industries are flourishing¬†as sectors are working together more to build the creative economy and identity of the city. The new partnership for South West Sound with the Watershed is a very exciting one and builds on our existing work with them and will strengthen our ongoing and successful working relationship with Dartington Plus and the Bristol Music Foundation.”
