Tim Smith

Tim Smith has taught music in secondary schools for over 31 years. Most of his work has been in London working in some of the more deprived areas. A number of years in Tower Hamlets allowed him to enjoy working with students on the Performance and Communications course run by Peter Renshaw from the Guildhall school of Music and Drama. It was during this time that Tim worked with many musicians who later became exponents of practical creative music projects with organisation such as ENO and The London Sinfonietta.

It was early in his career when Tim discovered how music could be created using a computer and from classes where students composed in basic using old BBC 32k machines Tim now teaches in a classroom with 20 workstations all running cubase. Tim regularly presents INSET on music technology and is widely involved in developing schemes of work to help teaches effectively make good creative use of new technology. Tim is also a Creative Agent for Arts Council and has organised many projects as part of Creative Partnerships.

Whilst head of Arts Faculty at Langdon Park, in Poplar, Tim established a music power series of workshops as part of Tower Hamlets Summer University and is delighted that this programme has been adopted by many other organisations including Roundhouse. It was also at this time that a certain Dylan Mills was to be found at every spare moment in the music room or working at the Steam Rooms recording Studio, he is of course Dizzee Rascal.

Tim is very pleased to be able to promote the work that he has done to encourage young people to make music and be creative.
